Deflection vs. Decoy: What's the Difference?

It's important to distinguish deflection from another tactic called a decoy. While both involve manipulating your opponent's pieces, they achieve this in different ways:

  • Deflection: You lure the opponent's piece away from a good square, typically where it defends something important.
  • Decoy: You lure the opponent's piece to a bad square, where it becomes vulnerable or weakens their position.

Deflection focuses on removing a defender, while a decoy aims to trap or misplace an enemy piece.

Triangulation is a tactic used in chess to put one's opponent in zugzwang (a position when it is a disadvantage to move). Triangulation is also called losing a tempo or losing a move.

Triangulation occurs most commonly in endgames with only kings and pawns when one king can maneuver on three adjacent squares in the shape of a triangle and maintain the basic position while the opposing king only has two such squares.
