It is characterized by the moves 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 c5 3. d5 e6.
The Benoni Defense can lead to complex and unbalanced positions, and it is not as popular as some other openings. It is often considered a risky opening, as Black must be careful not to allow White to gain a significant advantage in the center. However, with careful play and accurate defense, Black can often equalize the position and even gain the initiative.

The Benoni Defense is a chess opening that is named after the Hungarian chess player Gyula Benoni, who used it with success in the early 20th century.

The main idea behind the Benoni Defense is to counter White's central pawn advance with a pawn advance of your own on the queen-side. The pawn on c5 also serves to blockade White's pawn on d4, and the pawn on e6 helps to support the pawn on c5. Black's pieces are generally developed aggressively, with the aim of launching a counterattack against White's center.
